You may not drive your car as much as you used to, but experts say that doesn’t mean you should stop caring for it.
We spoke to Dean, Service Manager at Taylor’s Service Centers, who shares everything you need to know to keep your car in top shape during the pandemic.
Q: Do I still need to have my car serviced?
A: The last thing you need is for your car to break down or you have to shell out for an expensive repair. Catching these signs early could prevent minor problems from developing into bigger problems and, in turn, save you money. Regular car maintenance will give you peace of mind that your vehicle is safe to drive.
Q: What might not work with my car after a long period of inactivity?
A: Cars are designed for regular use. Your battery and brakes are the first to develop problems from inactivity. Your car is very likely to run out of battery. As you drive, your vehicle’s alternator will recharge your battery, which is often why it can run for years without draining its energy. If a vehicle is parked for a long time, the battery cannot charge and will likely discharge.
Q: How often should my car be serviced?
A: Most manufacturers recommend that a car be serviced every 12,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. Regular maintenance can help keep your car running smoothly and reduce the risk of breakdowns. If you subscribe to Taylor Service Centers, we’ll message you when your next service is due.
Q: What is included in a full car service?
A: It all depends on whether the vehicle is petrol or diesel. A full service will generally include everything in the interim service, plus additional checks and changes of other filters, spark plugs, or oils.
All services will involve visual checks of your car, such as looking for damage to your car’s bodywork or wheels. They’ll also include manual checks of things like your brakes and gearbox to make sure they’re working as they should. If you have an electric or hybrid car, the checks will focus on your charging port, cables and connections.
Q: What about my MOT? Can it be extended again or do I have to meet my normal deadline?
A: Garages are allowed to continue to operate during this third lockdown in accordance with new safety guidelines. This means that a new MOT extension is unlikely to be introduced.
If your vehicle requires an MOT certificate, it is illegal to drive it without one and your insurance may be invalid if you do. You can put your registration on the gov.uk website to find out the exact expiry date of your MOT.
Q: When should I reserve my car for an MOT?
A: I would always recommend reserving your car for its MOT as soon as possible. Although we are efficient, there are only so many MOTs that we, or any other garage, can complete in a day! Booking your MOT well before it’s due gives you peace of mind and ensures you don’t miss the deadline.
Q: What impact has Covid-19 had on car repair shops?
A: We are certainly busier than usual; we are working on the backlog of vehicles that we were unable to service or MOT for six months during the first lockdown. If you need one or both, please contact us well before they are due.
Q: How safe is it to visit Taylor Service Centers?
A: As we navigate COVID-19, our greatest commitment is to keeping our employees, customers and community safe. To do this, we have made adjustments to our operations to take this into account. We ask that you disinfect your hands with the distributor provided at the entrance door. Our reception is equipped with plexiglass screens and clear floor markings with a distance of two meters to allow for social distancing. Seats are also arranged two meters apart. Our reception team and our technicians wear masks and the vehicles are wiped before and after intervention. The keys are also disinfected before being returned.
