SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – All cable car services in San Francisco were closed Thursday afternoon after SFMTA had to evacuate the cable car barn due to a smoke alarm, according to transit officials.
The SFMTA’s Twitter account posted about the service shutting down around 1:45 p.m. Thursday. Muni officials said shuttle buses would provide service to cover the Powell, Powerll-Hyde, Powell-Mason and California cable car lines.

Officials did not initially explain why the cable car barn had to be evacuated.
Transport officials later said a smoke alarm went off in the cable car barn, prompting the evacuation. But apparently it was a false alarm.
However, a power failure resulted in the shutdown of all cable car services. This failure was in progress.
UPDATE: Evacuation is now complete due to a previous smoke detector. All cable car lines will continue to be down due to a power outage. Bus shuttles providing the service. Will update. https://t.co/6vGnMj9Ihm
